the Dracaena Marginata, or the Madagascar Dragon Tree as we often call it, is a real architectural beauty. It’s perfect for adding a bit of height and a "palm-like" vibe to a room without needing a conservatory-sized space.
It’s one of our sturdiest residents, but like all of us, it has its preferences. Here is everything you need to know to keep yours thriving:
The Dragon Tree Essentials
-
Origin: As the name suggests, these beauties hail from Madagascar. In their natural habitat, they can grow into quite substantial trees, but indoors they stay much more manageable.
Indoor Care Guide:
-
Light: They’re quite flexible. They love bright, indirect light, but they’re remarkably patient with lower light levels. Just keep them out of direct midday sun, or those lovely red-edged leaves might get a bit scorched.
-
Watering: This is where most people trip up. They prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Give the top inch or two of soil a feel; if it’s dry, it’s time for a drink. They’d much rather be slightly underwatered than sitting in soggy "wet feet."
-
Temperature: They like a comfortable room temperature. Try to keep them away from cold draughts or radiators, as they aren't fans of extreme temperature swings.
-
Humidity: They aren't too fussy about British humidity, but if your home gets very dry in the winter, a quick mist of the leaves every now and then will keep them looking lush.
-
Toxicity: The Dragon Tree is toxic to cats and dogs if nibbled. It contains saponins which can cause stomach upset or drooling. It’s best kept on a high stand if you have curious furry friends wandering about.
