The Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) is a stunning succulent with unique zigzag leaves resembling a fishbone. This low-maintenance plant is perfect for any indoor space, providing a touch of natural beauty. Native Habitat: Rainforests of Mexico, where they grow on trees (epiphytic). Why it matters: This environment dictates its preference for humidity and indirect light, not direct desert sun.
Fishbone cactus Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid strong, direct sun to prevent scorching. A north or west-facing window is ideal.
- Watering: Water when the topsoil feels dry, allowing it to dry out more in winter; never let it sit in water. Use tepid water. Water from bellow or around the edges, not on the stems.
- Humidity: Loves humidity; mist regularly or use a humidifier, especially in dry rooms.
- Soil: Use a porous, well-draining mix, like for orchids, with bark/perlite, but one that retains some moisture.
- Temperature: Warm conditions; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during spring/summer with a balanced cactus fertiliser.
- Potting: Needs a sturdy pot with drainage holes as it can get heavy and trailing.
- Pruning: Prune in spring/summer to shape and encourage new growth from the base.
- Fun Facts: Other Names: Zig Zag Cactus, Ric Rac Cactus.
- Flowers: Mature plants can produce large, fragrant, white flowers.
- Pet-Friendly: Non-toxic and safe for pets and children.
- Propagation: Easy to propagate from stem cuttings.
- Non-Toxic: pet safe
