Senecio Herreianus - String of beads
Senecio Herreianus, commonly known as String of Beads, is one of our favourite trailing succulents. Its delicate stems are covered with unusual bead-shaped leaves, making it perfect for a hanging pot or high shelf.
Native to the dry regions of southern Africa, particularly Namibia and South Africa, it enjoys plenty of light and minimal watering.
Care Guide
- Light: Place in bright, indirect light with some gentle morning or evening sunshine. Avoid harsh midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.
- Watering: Allow the compost to dry out completely before watering thoroughly. Reduce watering considerably during winter and never leave the pot standing in water.
- Temperature: Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
- Humidity: Normal or low household humidity is ideal. Avoid misting, as excess moisture can encourage rot.
- Compost: Use free-draining cactus or succulent compost, ideally mixed with extra perlite or horticultural grit.
- Feeding: Apply a diluted cactus or succulent feed once a month during spring and summer. Do not feed during autumn or winter.
- Repotting: Repot in spring every two to three years, or when root-bound. Choose a shallow pot with drainage holes and handle the delicate stems carefully.
- Pruning: Trim any damaged or overly long stems to maintain a neat shape and encourage fuller growth.
- Propagation: Take stem cuttings in spring or summer. Lay a section of stem across moist, free-draining compost so that several nodes touch the surface.
- Common problems: Soft, translucent or mushy beads usually indicate overwatering. Shrunken or flattened beads may mean the plant needs water.
- Pet safety: String of Beads is toxic if eaten and its sap may irritate the skin. Keep it away from children and pets.
