Begonia Maculata - Polka dot begonia
If you’re looking to add a bit of "theatrical flair" to your indoor jungle, you really can’t go wrong with the Begonia maculata.
Often called the 'Polka Dot Begonia', it’s a showstopper that looks like someone has meticulously hand-painted silver spots onto olive-green wings. I’ve had mine for a few years now, and while it’s a bit of a diva compared to a hardy Pothos, it’s well worth the effort.
Origin & Background
-
Native Habitat: These beauties hail from the Atlantic rainforests of South-East Brazil.
-
Growth Habit: In the wild, they are "cane-stemmed" begonias, meaning they grow upright on sturdy, bamboo-like stalks.
-
Visuals: They are famous for their silver maculations (spots) and their striking crimson-red undersides, which provide a lovely contrast when the light hits them.
Care Guide
-
Light: They fancy bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun as it will scorch those lovely silver spots. A spot near an east or west-facing window is usually spot on.
-
Watering: This is the tricky bit. They like to stay consistently moist but never soggy. I wait until the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch before giving it a thorough drink. Always let the excess water drain away—they loathe "wet feet."
-
Humidity: Being from the rainforest, they crave humidity. If your home is a bit dry, place it on a pebble tray or group it with other plants. Do try to avoid misting the leaves directly, as they can be prone to powdery mildew.
-
Temperature: Keep them in a warmish room. They are quite sensitive to cold draughts, so keep them away from windows or front doors during the winter.
-
Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), I give mine a balanced liquid fertiliser at half-strength every fortnight.
-
Pruning: They can get a bit "leggy" if left to their own devices. Don't be afraid to pinch back the tips to encourage a bushier shape.
Pro Tip: If you’re lucky, your Begonia maculata will reward you with clusters of delicate white or pale pink flowers in the summer!
