Begonia Maculata Spotlight Dark
If you’re looking for a plant that looks like it’s been hand-painted by an artist with a penchant for polka dots, you’ve found it.
The Begonia Maculata 'Spotlight Dark' is a showstopper. It’s a cane-stemmed begonia, often called the "Polka Dot Begonia," but this specific cultivar is particularly moody and magnificent. It features deep, olive-to-burgundy undersides and those iconic silver splashes on the top. It’s dramatic, a bit of a diva, but absolutely worth the effort for the aesthetic payoff.
Origin
-
The Wild Roots: The parent species, Begonia maculata, is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil.
-
The Look: In its natural habitat, it grows on the forest floor, which is why it loves dappled light rather than the harsh midday sun.
Care Guide
-
Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, as those delicate leaves will scorch. A spot near an east or west-facing window is usually spot on.
-
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Wait until the top inch of soil feels dry before watering again. Be careful not to let it sit in a saucer of water, as they are prone to root rot.
-
Humidity: These are tropical plants, so they crave high humidity. I’d recommend a pebble tray or a humidifier. Try to avoid misting the leaves directly, as they can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
-
Temperature: Keep it in a warm room. Most importantly, keep it away from cold draughts or radiators.
-
Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser once a fortnight during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage those dainty white flowers to bloom.
Toxicity
-
For Humans & Pets: Unfortunately, the Begonia Maculata is toxic if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth, swelling, and vomiting.
-
Placement: Best kept on a high shelf or a plant stand out of reach of curious nibbling cats, dogs, or toddlers.
