Calathea ornata Beauty Star
The Calathea ornata ‘Beauty Star’ is a real beauty. While the standard Ornata is famous for those delicate "pinstripes," the ‘Beauty Star’ takes it up a notch with elegant, elongated leaves and bright strokes of lime green that look as if they’ve been hand-painted right onto the dark emerald foliage.
Like all Calatheas, she’s a bit of a "Prayer Plant"—you’ll notice her leaves folding up at night as if in prayer, then spreading wide to catch the morning sun. She’s got a bit of a reputation for being a "drama queen," but once you understand her rhythm, she’s incredibly rewarding.
Origin
-
Native Habitat: The tropical rainforests of South America, specifically Brazil and Colombia.
-
Natural Environment: It grows on the forest floor, dappled in filtered sunlight and surrounded by high humidity.
Indoor Care Guide
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct afternoon sun will scorch those beautiful leaves, but too little light will cause the vibrant patterns to fade.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Use filtered water or rainwater if you can; they are quite sensitive to the chlorine and fluoride found in British tap water.
-
Humidity: This is the "Beauty Star’s" best friend. They crave high humidity. Mist her regularly, use a pebble tray, or keep her near a humidifier to prevent those dreaded crispy brown edges.
-
Temperature: She likes to stay cosy. Be sure to keep her away from cold draughts or radiators, as sudden temperature swings will cause a sulk.
-
Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer. No need to feed during the winter months when growth slows down.
Toxicity
-
Pet & Child Friendly: You’ll be pleased to know she is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. It’s the perfect choice if you have curious nibblers at home!
