Asplenium pervati - Mother fern

The Asplenium 'Parvati'. It’s one of our favourites because it’s a bit of a "tough cookie" compared to its more delicate fern cousins. Commonly known as the Mother Fern, this plant has these wonderful, waxy, dark green fronds that feel almost like plastic to the touch. It’s a hybrid, so it’s been bred specifically to be a bit more resilient in a typical home environment.

Origin

• Heritage: This plant is a hybrid cross, though its parentage traces back to species found in the humid forests of Australasia and South East Asia.

• Natural Habitat: In the wild, its ancestors are often epiphytic, meaning they grow on trees or in rock crevices rather than in the ground.

Care Guide

• Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun as it will scorch those lovely fronds. It can handle a bit of shade, but it might grow a little slower.

• Watering: Keep the soil moist but never soggy. I usually recommend watering when the top inch of soil feels dry. A cheeky tip: try to water around the edge of the pot rather than directly into the centre (the "crown"), as this helps prevent rot.

• Humidity: Being a fern, it loves a bit of moisture in the air. It’s a perfect candidate for a bright bathroom or kitchen. If your lounge is quite dry, a regular misting or a pebble tray will keep it very happy.

• Temperature: It prefers a steady environment. Do try to keep it away from cold draughts or radiators, as they can be a bit of a shock to the system.

• Feeding: Give it a bit of liquid fertiliser at half-strength once a month during the spring and summer. There’s no need to feed it during the winter months.
