Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exalta 'Bostoniensis'). It’s an absolute classic of the Victorian era that’s made a massive comeback, and for good reason—those lush, arching fronds bring a wonderful bit of woodland magic into any room.

Origins

  • Native Habitat: These ferns are native to tropical regions throughout the world, particularly the Americas, Africa, and Polynesia.

  • The "Boston" Name: Despite the tropical roots, this specific variety was discovered in a shipment of ferns being sent from Philadelphia to Boston in the late 19th century. It was a natural mutation that was much more robust and attractive than the standard sword fern.

Care Guide

  • Light: They prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid placing them in harsh, midday sun as it will scorch those delicate fronds. A north-facing windowsill is often a "sweet spot" here in the UK.

  • Watering: They like to stay consistently moist. You should water them when the surface of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch, but never let the pot sit in water, as this leads to root rot.

  • Humidity: This is the big one! Boston Ferns adore high humidity. They are perfect for a steamy bathroom. If you keep yours in a lounge, give it a frequent misting or set it on a tray of wet pebbles.

  • Temperature: They prefer a steady, moderate temperature. Do keep them well away from cold draughts or dry radiators, as they’ll drop their leaflets if they get a chill or dry out too fast.

  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give them a liquid feed at half-strength about once a month.

  • Pet & Child Friendly: You’ll be pleased to know that the Boston Fern is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. It’s a fantastic choice for a household with curious four-legged friends!

They really are a delight, especially when they’re hanging up high so their fronds can tumble down.
