Cacti are a diverse family of succulent perennial plants, with over 2,000 species, mostly native to the Americas. They are highly adapted to dry environments by storing water in their fleshy stems and reducing water loss through spines (modified leaves). A few species, like Rhipsalis baccifera, are also found in Africa and Sri Lanka.
Caring for most cacti is straightforward and low-maintenance, largely revolving around replicating their native arid conditions.
Cacti Care Guide
- Light: Place in a bright, sunny spot, ideally a south-facing window, where they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Gradual acclimation to intense sun prevents scorch.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during the spring and summer growing season (every 1-2 weeks), but reduce watering significantly during the dormant winter period (every 4-6 weeks). It is better to underwater than to overwater.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, gritty cactus or succulent potting mix to prevent root rot. You can buy pre-made mixes or create your own using regular potting soil mixed with perlite or coarse sand. Use a pot with drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. Cacti prefer to be slightly pot-bound, so choose a container only slightly larger than the root ball.
- Temperature: They thrive in warm conditions during the growing season. A cooler rest period in winter is important to encourage flowering.
- Humidity: Cacti prefer low to average household humidity and do not require misting.
- Fertiliser: Feed sparingly during the spring and summer growing season with a diluted, balanced, low-nitrogen or potassium-based fertiliser (e.g., a tomato or cactus feed). Do not fertilise during winter dormancy.
