The Dieffenbachia 'Mars' variety is particularly striking because of its speckled, cream-and-green variegated leaves. It looks almost as if someone’s splashed a bit of starlight across the foliage, hence the name.

Origin

  • Tropical Roots: Like all Dumb Canes, the 'Mars' hails from the tropical regions of Central and South America, specifically the Caribbean.

  • Climate: It naturally grows on the forest floor, meaning it’s used to dappled sunlight and high humidity.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. Think of a spot near an east- or west-facing window. Avoid direct midday sun, as those lovely variegated leaves will scorch and turn crisp.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. I usually recommend waiting until the top inch of soil feels dry before giving it a drink. Overwatering is the quickest way to cause root rot.

  • Humidity: Being a tropical soul, it loves a bit of moisture in the air. Give it a regular mist, pop it on a pebble tray, or keep it in a bathroom if you have the light for it.

  • Temperature: It likes to stay warm. Keep it away from cold draughty doors or radiators that might dry it out.

  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give it a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month. In the winter, you can leave it be.

Toxicity

  • Keep Out of Reach: This is the important bit. Dieffenbachia contains calcium oxalate crystals.

  • Effects: If any part of the plant is brushed against or ingested, it can cause swelling of the mouth and throat, redness, and irritation.

  • Safety: I strongly advise keeping this one on a high shelf or stand if you have curious pets or small children roaming about. It’s always best to wear gloves when pruning to avoid skin irritation from the sap.
