The Hedera helix, or the English Ivy, is a quintessential addition to any indoor jungle. It’s a versatile little beauty—whether you want it to spill elegantly from a hanging macramé planter or train it to climb up a moss pole, it’s always happy to oblige. It has that wonderful, nostalgic woodland feel that really softens the sharp lines of a modern room.

Origin

  • Native Roots: It is native to most of Europe and Western Asia.

  • Natural Habitat: In the wild, you’ll find it covering the floors of damp forests or hitching a ride up the trunks of ancient oaks. Because it’s a native UK species, it’s incredibly hardy and well-adapted to our temperate climate.

Care Guide

  • Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate a bit of shade, those lovely variegated varieties (the ones with white or yellow edges) will lose their colour and turn solid green if it’s too dark. Avoid direct midday sun, or you'll scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Wait until the top inch of compost feels dry to the touch before giving it a drink. It absolutely hates "wet feet," so do make sure your pot has good drainage holes.

  • Humidity: These plants adore a bit of moisture in the air. Give it a regular misting with a spray bottle, especially in winter when the central heating kicks in and dries everything out.

  • Temperature: It’s a fan of cooler spots. Keep it away from draughty windows or hot radiators.

  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give it a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month.

  • Toxicity: It is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains saponins which can cause vomiting, drooling, and tummy upsets.

  • Humans: The sap and berries are toxic to humans and can cause skin irritation (dermatitis) for some people. It’s always a good idea to wear gardening gloves when you're giving it a proper prune.
