If you’re looking for something with a bit of personality, you really can’t go wrong with the Pilea peperomioides. We often call it the Chinese Money Plant or the "Friendship Plant" because it produces so many little "pups" that you can pot up and give to your mates. It’s got such a distinct, architectural look with those perfectly round, pancake-like leaves.

Origin

  • Native Habitat: It hails from the Yunnan Province in Southern China.

  • Discovery: It was famously brought over to Europe by a Norwegian missionary in the 1940s, which is why it’s also sometimes called the "Missionary Plant."

Care Guide

  • Light: They adore bright, indirect light. A spot near a north or east-facing window is perfect. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, as it can scorch those lovely green leaves.

  • Watering: Wait until the soil has mostly dried out before watering again—usually every 7 to 10 days. If the leaves start to look a bit droopy, she’s telling you she’s thirsty.

  • Feeding: Give it a bit of liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). No need to feed it during the winter when it's resting.

  • Temperature: It’s quite happy in standard British household temperatures. Just keep it away from draughty windows or radiators, as it doesn't fancy extreme temperature swings.

  • Humidity: It’s not overly fussy about humidity, but it will appreciate a light misting or being placed in a bathroom with a bit of steam.

  • Maintenance: These plants grow towards the light, so give the pot a quarter-turn every week to keep it growing straight and symmetrical.

  • Non-Toxic: safe for pets

Top Tip: If you see tiny white spots on the underside of the leaves, don’t panic! Those are just mineral pores, often caused by salts or chemicals in tap water. Using filtered water or letting tap water sit out overnight usually does the trick.
