The real classic, Schlumbergera, commonly known as the Christmas Cacti (or Thanksgiving/Easter cacti, depending on when they decide to show off those stunning blooms).

They aren't your typical desert cacti; they are "epiphytes," meaning in the wild, they actually grow on trees rather than in the sand. They are wonderfully resilient and can live for decades—I’ve known some families to pass them down through generations!

Origin

  • The Brazilian Rainforest: Unlike their prickly cousins from the Sahara, these beauties originate from the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil.

  • Tree Dwellers: In their natural habitat, they live in the nooks of tree branches, soaking up the dappled sunlight and high humidity of the tropical canopy.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: They fancy bright, indirect light. A spot near an east-facing window is perfect. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, as it can scorch those fleshy segments.

  • Watering: Keep the compost moist but never soggy. Wait until the top inch of soil feels dry before watering again. In the winter, you can scale back a bit.

  • Temperature: They enjoy a comfortable room temperature. Try to keep them away from cold draughts or radiators, as sudden temperature swings can cause their flower buds to drop off prematurely.

  • Humidity: Being jungle plants, they love a bit of moisture in the air. Misting them occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of wet pebbles will make them feel right at home.

  • Encouraging Blooms: To get those famous flowers in winter, they need "rest" in autumn—shorter days (about 12 hours of darkness) and slightly cooler temperatures.

Toxicity

  • Pet Friendly: Great news for cat and dog owners! Schlumbergera is considered non-toxic to pets.

  • Mild Caution: While they aren't poisonous, if a curious pup nibbles on the fibrous stems, it might cause a bit of an upset tummy or vomiting, simply because it's not part of their usual diet.

  • Human Safety: They are perfectly safe to handle, as they don't have the sharp spines found on other cacti.
