If you’re looking for a fast-growing trailing plant with bold colour and a bit of shimmer, the Tradescantia Zebrina is a fabulous choice. Its striped leaves are a striking mix of green, silver, and purple, with deep violet undersides that make it look beautiful spilling from a shelf, hanging pot, or trailing over the edge of a planter.

Origin: Tradescantia zebrina is native to Mexico, Central America, and parts of Colombia. It naturally grows in warm, humid environments, often spreading as ground cover, which explains its wonderfully quick-growing, trailing habit indoors.

Care Guide

Light: Tradescantia zebrina loves bright, indirect light. Good light helps keep the leaf colours vivid and the growth nice and compact. It can tolerate a little gentle morning or evening sun, but avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering. It likes lightly moist soil during the growing season, but it does not enjoy sitting wet. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

Temperature & Humidity: It prefers normal household warmth and should be kept away from cold draughts or chilly windowsills. It enjoys a little extra humidity, but it will usually cope well in average home conditions.

Feeding: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. No feeding is needed during winter while growth naturally slows.

Toxicity: Important! Tradescantia zebrina can be mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested, and its sap may cause skin irritation for some people. Keep it away from curious pets and children.

It’s a brilliant plant for adding colour and movement to a room. Very easy to grow, quick to trail, and perfect for a bright spot.
