If you’re looking for something that’s as charming as a storybook illustration but surprisingly resilient, you’ve found it. The Tradescantia 'Pink Lady' (often confused with its cousin, the Callisia repens) is one of our absolute bestsellers.

It is a miniature, trailing succulent-like plant characterized by a dense carpet of tiny, heart-shaped leaves. What makes it a showstopper is the variegation—a whimsical mix of blush pink, creamy white, and mint green.

Origin & Heritage

The Tradescantia genus is native to the Americas, stretching from southern Canada down to northern Argentina. However, the 'Pink Lady' cultivar thrives specifically in the warm, bright environments of Mexico and Central America. It’s naturally an opportunistic creeper, meaning in the wild, it loves to spread across the forest floor or tumble down rocky crevices.

Indoor Care Guide:

In the UK, these beauties are happiest indoors where they can stay tucked away from the frost. Here is how to keep yours thriving:

  • Light: She is a sun-seeker! To maintain those vibrant pink hues, place her in bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Too little light and she’ll "revert" to plain green; too much direct midday sun and her delicate leaves might scorch.
  • Watering: Wait until the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry before watering. These plants are prone to root rot if they sit in soggy compost. When you do water, try to avoid getting the foliage wet, as the dense leaves can trap moisture and lead to mould.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A blend of standard houseplant compost with a generous handful of perlite or grit works a treat to ensure the roots can breathe.
  • Temperature: She prefers a room temperature. Keep her away from cold draughty windows and radiators during the winter months.
  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give her a splash of liquid fertiliser once a month. There’s no need to feed during the winter dormancy.
  • Pruning: These plants can get a bit "leggy" over time. Don't be afraid to pinch back the stems; this encourages the plant to grow bushier rather than just longer.

Pro Tip: If a stem snaps off, don't bin it! These are incredibly easy to propagate. Just pop the cutting back into the soil, and it will likely take root within a couple of weeks.
