Asplenium antiquum 'Osaka'
Asplenium antiquum ‘Osaka’, more commonly known as the Japanese Bird’s Nest Fern.
If you’re looking to add a bit of architectural flair to your home, this is the plant for you. Unlike the wild, messy fronds of some ferns, the ‘Osaka’ is wonderfully structural. It features glossy, bright green leaves that grow in a tight rosette, and the edges are beautifully rippled and crinkled, almost like a head of kale or a designer ruff. It’s a fantastic choice for a bathroom or a shady corner that needs a bit of life.
Origin
-
Native Habitat: This fern originates from the subtropical forests of East Asia, specifically Japan and Taiwan.
-
Growth Habit: In the wild, it is often epiphytic, meaning it grows on trees or rocks rather than in the soil, soaking up moisture from the humid forest air.
Indoor Care Guide
-
Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight as this will scorch those delicate ruffled edges. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth will be slower.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water around the edge of the pot rather than directly into the centre (the "nest"), as standing water in the crown can cause the plant to rot.
-
Humidity: These plants adore high humidity. It’s happiest in a bathroom or kitchen. If your home is a bit dry, place the pot on a tray of wet pebbles or give it a regular misting.
-
Temperature: It thrives in average household temperatures. Keep it away from cold draughts or hot radiators.
-
Feeding: Use a weak liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer. There’s no need to feed it during the winter months.
Toxicity
-
Pet & Child Friendly: Great news! The ‘Osaka’ is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. It is a perfectly safe addition to a family home.
