If you're looking for a plant that is as easy-going as it is beautiful, you really can’t go wrong with the Philodendron scandens 'Brasil'. It’s often the star of the show on our shelves because of those gorgeous heart-shaped leaves splashed with neon lime and forest green. It looks absolutely stunning trailing down from a bookshelf or a hanging macramé planter.

In the wild, these beauties are natural climbers. When you provide them with a vertical structure to "grip" onto, you’re mimicking their natural habitat, giving it a moss pole completely transforms the plant.

Origin

The Philodendron scandens (Heartleaf Philodendron) is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, specifically the Caribbean and Mexico. The 'Brasil' cultivar is a vibrant, variegated mutation of the classic green variety, celebrated for its "painted" look.

Care Guide

  • Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light levels, the beautiful yellow variegation may fade to solid green if it's too dark. Avoid direct midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Wait until the top two inches of soil have dried out before watering. It’s quite a forgiving plant; it prefers being slightly underwatered rather than sitting in soggy soil. In winter, you can reduce watering further.

  • Humidity: Being a tropical native, it loves a bit of humidity. A light misting now and then or grouping it with other plants will keep it very happy, though it copes remarkably well with standard household air.

  • Temperature: It prefers a warm spot. Keep it away from cold draughts or radiators, which can dry out the foliage.

  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give it a liquid fertiliser once a month to encourage those long, trailing vines.

Pet Safety & Toxicity

  • Toxic: Unfortunately, like most Philodendrons, the 'Brasil' is toxic to cats and dogs (and humans!) if ingested.

  • It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation of the mouth, swelling, and digestive upset.

  • Top Tip: Since this is a trailing plant, I always recommend keeping it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket to keep it well out of reach of curious paws or nibbling toddlers.
