The Best Houseplants for Bringing Autumn Vibes Indoors

I absolutely love autumn. There's something about this season and all the warm colours that makes you happy. Think glowing reds, burnt oranges, and deep, earthy tones.

But instead of the usual pumpkins and candles, why not bring some of those gorgeous autumnal colours indoors with houseplants that have warm reds, deep oranges, and earthy tones?

We've listed some of our favourites below.

Rex Begonia

Rex Begonia is a STUNNING plant. Its leaves look as if they’ve been hand-painted in copper, brick red, and olive green, with these exquisite patterns and a velvety feel that’s is so lovely.

They really add drama and warmth to any room, but without feeling garish. Great for adding some autumnal charm.

Try and find varieties like ‘Tiger Paw’ or ‘Escargot’ that have beautiful leaf shapes and intense patterns. These plants are going to like bright, indirect light to flourish.

Peperomia Rosso

If you’re looking for something compact with rich, burgundy undersides and glossy green tops, the Peperomia Rosso is is just the one. It’s the kind of plant that fits beautifully on a desk, side table, or windowsill, perfect for those homes where space and light can sometimes be a challenge.

The classic Rosso or heart-shaped ‘Red Splash’ are lovely options. It prefers moderate light and likes watering only when the soil dries out.

Aluminum Plant (Pilea cadierei)

Though not a classic “autumn” coloured plant, the shimmering silvery patches on the Aluminum Plant's leaves complement autumn colours beautifully. It’s remarkably easy to look after and thrives in lower light, which makes it a versatile gem for those darker nooks where you still want to add a fresh, seasonal touch. Look out for popular varieties like ‘Moon Valley’ or ‘Silver Tree’ to get the brightest, most eye-catching silver markings. Keep it away from draughts and water when the top inch of soil feels dry, it’ll happily reward you with plenty of glossy, healthy leaves.

Calatheas (Maranta leuconeura)

Calatheas are stunning, if a bit fussy plants. We love the darker varieties with maroon, and purple tones. It’s perfect for creating a welcoming, snug autumn corner you’ll want to linger in with a cuppa.

They prefer lower to medium light and enjoy a steady, moist soil and plus a bit of humidity now and then.

Oxalis (False Shamrock)

Oxalis have the most beautiful triangular leaves, in rich shades of burgundy or deep purple.

It thrives in lower light and folds its leaves up at night, opening them again to the morning light.

Keep the soil evenly moist and provide some indirect light if you can.

These are often sold in nurseries as an outdoor plant, but it won't like the cold. So if you have one, bring it in.

Chinese Evergreen

We are big fans of Chinese Evergreen at The Green East and usually go for ones with red and pink tinges. Relatively low-maintenance that grows well in low to medium light and doesn’t require a lot of fuss.

Varieties like ‘Red Siam’ or ‘Maria’ give you that warm burst of colour you’re after. Just keep it moist but not soggy.

Stromanthe tricolor

Stromanthe tricolor is this amazing multicoloured plant you've got to add to your autumnal décor. The ‘Triostar’ is a popular variety. Just avoid strong sun and water when the top of the soil feels dry.

Play with the Details: Pots and Displays

To really bring out those warm tones, consider swapping your usual plant pots to autumnal shades like terracotta, burnt orange, ochre, or rusty reds. These warm pot colours can really lift your indoor greenery and tie in beautifully with the seasonal atmosphere.
