Aeschynanthus Mona Lisa- Lipstick plant
Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’ (Lipstick Plant)
Aeschynanthus ‘Mona Lisa’, commonly known as the Lipstick Plant, is one of our favourite trailing houseplants. With glossy green leaves and striking red, lipstick-shaped flowers, it looks beautiful cascading from a shelf or hanging pot. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia
Care Guide
- Light: Place in bright, indirect light. Avoid strong midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may reduce flowering.
- Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during winter.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Keep away from radiators and cold draughts; use a humidifier or pebble tray if your home is particularly dry.
- Temperature: Avoid temperatures below 15°C and sudden temperature changes.
- Compost: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant compost. Adding perlite or fine orchid bark will improve drainage and aeration.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant feed at half strength every two to four weeks during spring and summer. Do not feed in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every two to three years, preferably in spring. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one and ensure it has drainage holes.
- Pruning: Trim long or untidy stems after flowering to encourage bushier growth. Remove dead leaves and faded flowers as needed.
- Flowering: Its red, tubular flowers emerge from dark buds resembling tubes of lipstick. Consistent warmth, bright light and slightly root-bound conditions can encourage blooms.
- Propagation: Take stem cuttings in spring or summer. Remove the lower leaves and place the cuttings in moist, free-draining compost.
- Common problems: Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering, while crispy edges can suggest dry air or underwatering. Watch for mealybugs, aphids and spider mites.
- Pet safety: Lipstick plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although chewing any plant may still cause mild stomach upset.
