Philodendron ‘Neon Lemon Lime’, commonly sold as Philodendron ‘Lemon Lime’, is a vibrant trailing houseplant with heart-shaped leaves in shades of chartreuse, lime and golden yellow. We love it for bringing instant colour to shelves, hanging displays and plant stands. It is also forgiving, fast-growing and suitable for beginners.

Origin

Philodendron ‘Lemon Lime’ is a cultivated variety of Philodendron hederaceum. Its parent species originates from the tropical regions of Central America and the Caribbean, where it grows beneath the forest canopy and climbs trees in warm, humid conditions.

Care Guide

  • Light: Place in bright, indirect light to maintain its vivid colouring. It will tolerate lower light, but growth may become slower and the leaves greener. Avoid strong, direct midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.
  • Water: Water when the top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry. Soak the compost thoroughly, then allow all excess water to drain away. Water less frequently during autumn and winter.
  • Humidity: Average household humidity is usually sufficient, although the plant will appreciate higher humidity. Keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and very dry air.
  • Temperature: Maintain a warm temperature. Avoid temperatures below 13°C and protect the plant from sudden temperature changes.
  • Compost: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant compost. Adding perlite, orchid bark or coco coir will improve airflow around the roots.
  • Pot: Always use a pot with drainage holes. Never allow the plant to sit in water, as constantly wet compost can cause root rot.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Feeding is rarely necessary during winter.
  • Pruning: Trim long or untidy vines just above a leaf node to encourage bushier growth. Remove yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors.
  • Repotting: Repot every one to two years, or when roots begin to circle the pot or emerge through the drainage holes. Choose a new pot only slightly larger than the previous one.
  • Growth habit: Allow the stems to trail from a shelf or hanging pot, or train them up a moss pole or support for larger, more mature leaves.
  • Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one leaf and one node. Root it in water or moist compost before planting it into a small pot.
  • Common problems: Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering, while dry brown edges can be caused by inconsistent watering or very dry air. Long gaps between leaves usually mean the plant needs more light. Watch for common pests such as spider mites, thrips and mealybugs.

Pet Safety

  • Not pet-safe: Philodendron ‘Neon Lemon Lime’ is toxic to cats, dogs and other pets if chewed or eaten.
  • The plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause pain and irritation in the mouth.
  • Possible symptoms include drooling, pawing at the mouth, swelling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.
  • Keep the plant well out of the reach of pets and young children.
  • Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin, as the sap may cause irritation.
  • If your pet chews or eats any part of the plant, contact your veterinary practice promptly for advice.

Our Tip

Give your Philodendron plenty of bright, indirect light to preserve its glowing lime foliage. Regularly pinch back the growing tips if you prefer a fuller plant, or let the vines trail naturally for a lively cascade of colour.
