If you’re looking for a plant that’s as hardworking as it is handsome, let me introduce you to the Aglaonema 'Green Lady'.

In the shop, we often call these "the beginner's best friend." While some tropicals act like divas the moment a draught hits, the Green Lady stays perfectly poised with her elegant, lance-shaped leaves and that gorgeous silvery-green variegation.

Origin

The Aglaonema genus is native to the humid, tropical shadows of Southeast Asia (specifically Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia). In their natural habitat, they live on the forest floor, basking in the dappled light beneath the massive jungle canopy. This "understorey" upbringing is exactly why they’re so incredibly tolerant of the lower light levels in our British homes.

Indoor Care Guide:

The 'Green Lady' is remarkably unfussy, but she does have her preferences. Here is how to keep her thriving:

  • Light: She’s a versatile soul. She’ll be happiest in bright, indirect light, but she is famously tolerant of lower-light spots. Just keep her out of harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch those pretty leaves.
  • Watering: Don't be too heavy-handed with the watering can. Wait until the top two inches of soil feel dry to the touch. In the winter, you can cut back significantly.
  • Humidity: Being a tropical native, she enjoys a bit of moisture in the air. A light mist once or twice a week or a stay in a steamy bathroom will keep her tips from turning brown.
  • Temperature: She likes to stay cosy. Aim for a comfortable room temperature. Most importantly, keep her away from chilly draughts or those scorching-hot radiators in the winter.
  • Feeding: Give her a splash of liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer. She doesn't need any "food" during her winter slumber.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant compost with a bit of perlite mixed in works wonders to prevent "wet feet" (root rot).
  • Toxicity: Do keep in mind that Aglaonemas are toxic if ingested, so it's best to keep her on a shelf out of reach of curious cats or dogs.
