Ficus binnendijkii ‘Ali’

Ficus binnendijkii ‘Ali’, also commonly sold as Ficus ‘Alii’, is an elegant indoor tree with long, slender, deep-green leaves. Its graceful foliage gives it a softer appearance than the traditional Rubber Plant. We love it for bringing height, structure and a touch of the tropics to bright living spaces and offices.

Origin

The ‘Ali’ is a cultivated variety related to Ficus species native to the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. In its natural habitat, its relatives grow as evergreen trees in warm, humid forests.

Care Guide

  • Light: Position in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning or evening sunshine, but strong midday sun may scorch the leaves.

  • Water: Water when the top 3–5 cm of compost feels dry. Soak the compost thoroughly, then allow all excess water to drain away.

  • Consistency: Keep its watering routine reasonably consistent. Sudden changes in moisture levels can cause leaf drop.

  • Humidity: Average household humidity is usually suitable, although moderate humidity will help keep the foliage healthy. Keep away from radiators and very dry air.

  • Temperature: Maintain a warm room temperature. Protect the plant from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below 13°C.

  • Compost: Use a fertile, free-draining houseplant compost. Adding perlite or fine orchid bark will improve drainage and airflow around the roots.

  • Pot: Always use a pot with drainage holes. Never allow the plant to stand in water, as waterlogged compost can cause root rot.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

  • Positioning: Choose its location carefully and avoid moving it frequently. Ficus plants can respond to changes in light or temperature by dropping leaves.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant absorb light efficiently.

  • Pruning: Prune in spring to control its height or encourage branching. Wear gloves, as the milky sap may irritate the skin.

  • Repotting: Repot every two to three years, or when the roots have filled the container. Choose a new pot only slightly larger than the existing one.

  • Common problems: Yellow leaves may indicate overwatering, while dry brown edges can result from underwatering or low humidity. Sudden leaf drop is commonly caused by draughts, changing conditions or inconsistent watering. Watch for scale insects, mealybugs and spider mites.

Pet Safety

  • Not pet-safe: Ficus binnendijkii ‘Ali’ is toxic to cats, dogs and other pets if chewed or eaten.

  • Its milky latex sap can irritate the mouth, skin and digestive system.

  • Possible symptoms include drooling, vomiting, reduced appetite and irritation around the mouth.

  • Contact with the sap may also cause skin irritation in people and animals.

  • Keep the plant securely out of the reach of pets and young children.

  • If your pet chews or eats any part of the plant, contact your veterinary practice promptly for advice.

Our Tip

Ficus ‘Ali’ appreciates stability. Place it somewhere bright and warm, keep its watering routine consistent and avoid moving it unnecessarily. Once settled, it makes a graceful and dependable indoor tree.
