The Tradescantia cerinthoides ‘Sweetness’ is easily one of the most charming "Inch Plants" we have in stock. It’s often mistaken for its cousin, the Nanouk, but 'Sweetness' is a bit more delicate. It features those lovely pointed leaves with olive-green tops and a stunning, vibrant lilac-pink underside. When the light hits them just right, the whole plant seems to glow. It’s a fast grower, too, so you’ll have a trailing masterpiece in no time.

Origin

  • Heritage: The parent species, Tradescantia cerinthoides, is native to South America, specifically Brazil and Argentina.

  • The Cultivar: ‘Sweetness’ is a specially bred nursery cultivar, selected for its compact growth habit and that distinctive, sugary-pink variegation.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. A bit of morning sun is brilliant, but avoid harsh afternoon rays which can scorch the leaves. If the pink starts to fade to green, it’s usually telling you it needs more light.

  • Watering: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out before watering again. They don't like "wet feet," so ensure your pot has plenty of drainage. In winter, you can scale back significantly.

  • Humidity: These aren't too fussy about British central heating, but they do enjoy a bit of extra humidity. A light misting or a gravel tray will keep the leaf tips from browning.

  • Feeding: Give it a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

  • Pruning: Don’t be afraid to give it a "haircut." Pinching off the growing tips encourages the plant to branch out and look bushier rather than leggy.

Toxicity

  • Pets: Like most Tradescantias, it is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, potentially causing tummy upsets.

  • Humans: The sap can be a skin irritant for some people. I'd recommend wearing gloves or washing your hands after pruning to avoid any itchy rashes.
