If you’re looking for a plant that practically screams "designer piece" without the high-maintenance attitude, you’ve met your match. The Aglaonema 'Eyecatcher Red' is a showstopper. Unlike the usual leafy greens, this variety sports stunning, lance-shaped leaves splashed with vibrant crimson and deep pink, framed by a dark, moody green. It’s the perfect pop of colour for that dull corner you’ve been meaning to spruce up.

Origins

  • The Family: Part of the Araceae family, commonly known as "Chinese Evergreens."

  • Native Habitat: Originally hailing from the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and New Guinea.

  • Adaptation: They have evolved to live on the forest floor, which is why they are so famously tolerant of lower light levels in our homes.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: While it can tolerate lower light, the 'Eyecatcher Red' needs bright, indirect light to maintain those brilliant red hues. Avoid direct midday sun, as it will scorch the delicate leaves.

  • Watering: Wait for the top two inches of soil to dry out before watering again. They don't like "wet feet," so ensure your pot has plenty of drainage. In winter, reduce watering significantly.

  • Temperature: They prefer a cosy environment. Keep them away from cold draughty windows or radiators that might dry them out.

  • Humidity: Being a tropical native, it loves a bit of moisture in the air. A regular misting or a gravel tray with water will keep those leaf tips from browning.

  • Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer growing season.

Toxicity

  • Harmful Components: Contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are common in many houseplants.

  • For Pets: Highly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It can cause oral irritation, swelling of the mouth, and vomiting.

  • For Humans: Keep out of reach of small children. Ingestion causes similar irritation, and the sap can sometimes cause mild skin irritation for those with sensitive skin.
