Begonia Erythrophylla

Begonia erythrophylla, often called the Beefsteak Begonia, is one of our favourite characterful houseplants. Its glossy, rounded green leaves and rich red undersides bring beautiful colour and texture to any room. This historic hybrid was first developed in Germany in the 19th century from Brazilian begonia species.

• Light: Place in bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunshine, which can scorch the leaves.
• Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry. Keep it lightly moist, but never soggy, and empty any excess water from the saucer.
• Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Keep away from radiators and avoid misting the leaves, as prolonged moisture can encourage fungal problems.
• Temperature: Protect it from cold draughts. Avoid temperatures below 13°C.
• Compost: Use a light, free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite or fine orchid bark.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant feed at half strength every two to four weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in winter.
• Repotting: Repot in spring when the roots fill the pot. Choose a container only slightly larger than the current one, with good drainage holes.
• Pruning: Remove damaged or yellowing leaves and trim leggy stems to encourage fuller, bushier growth.
• Propagation: Take stem or leaf cuttings during spring or summer and place them in moist, well-draining compost.
• Common problems: Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, while brown, crispy edges can suggest dry air or underwatering. Watch for mealybugs and spider mites.
• Pet safety: Begonias are toxic if eaten by cats and dogs, with the highest concentration of irritants found in the roots.
