The Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta' (or the Pineapple Dracaena, as we often call it here) is the tidy, sophisticated cousin of the more sprawling Dragon Trees. If you’re looking for something that brings a bit of architectural drama without colonising your entire living room, this is your plant. It features tight clusters of glossy, deep-green leaves that look almost like a miniature palm tree had a very chic makeover.

• Origin: Originally hailing from the tropical regions of Southeast Africa, specifically areas like Upper Guinea and Ethiopia.

• Vibe: Architectural, slow-growing, and incredibly sturdy. Perfect for a minimalist flat.

Care Guide

• Light: It’s quite easy-going but prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels better than most, but avoid harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch those lovely dark leaves.

• Watering: This is where most people trip up! It prefers to dry out significantly. Only water when the top 5–7 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. In the winter, you can practically forget about it for a few weeks.

• Humidity: It’s happy with standard UK household humidity, but it will appreciate a light misting now and then if you’ve got the central heating cranked up.

• Feeding: Not a heavy eater. A bit of liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer is plenty. Leave it be during the winter months.

• Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. If it sits in soggy soil, it’ll get "wet feet" (root rot), and it won't be a happy camper.

Toxicity & Safety

• Pets: Take care if you have curious furry friends. It is toxic to both cats and dogs if ingested, typically causing vomiting or drooling.

• Humans: It is also mildly toxic to humans. It's best kept out of reach of toddlers who might fancy a nibble, as it can cause stomach upset.

It really is a "set it and forget it" kind of plant, making it a brilliant choice for a home office or a hallway corner that needs a splash of green.
