Rhipsalis also know as Mistletoe Cactus, Jungle cactus or Coral cactus. They’re a bit of a "rebel" in the cactus family. While most cacti love a scorching desert, these beauties are actually epiphytic, meaning in the wild, they hang out in the crooks of tree branches in tropical rainforests. They bring a lovely, soft architectural vibe to a room, especially when they start cascading down from a high shelf or a hanging macramé planter.
-
Origin: Mostly native to the rainforests of Central and South America, though a few species have made their way over to Africa and Sri Lanka.
-
Light: Unlike their desert cousins, they dislike direct, harsh sunlight. They prefer bright, indirect light. A bit of morning sun is fine, but midday rays will scorch those delicate stems.
-
Watering: They enjoy a bit more moisture than a standard cactus. Aim to water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Don't let them sit in a puddle, though—they hate "wet feet."
-
Humidity: Being jungle plants, they adore a humid environment. They’re brilliant for a steamy bathroom or a kitchen, otherwise, a light misting now and then will keep them chirpy.
-
Temperature: They like to stay cosy. Keep them in a spot that stays above 12°C. Avoid drafty windows during our chilly British winters!
-
Soil: Use a well-draining mix. A blend of cacti compost with a bit of orchid bark mixed in works wonders to mimic their natural tree-top home.
-
Toxicity: This is the best bit—most Rhipsalis varieties are considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. They are a very safe bet if you have curious pets or little ones running about.
They are incredibly low-maintenance once you find their "sweet spot" for light.
