Pilea peperomioides - Variegated Chinese Money Leaf ‘Sugar’
If you’re looking for a cute, compact houseplant with a little extra sparkle, the Pilea peperomioides ‘Sugar’, also known as the Variegated Chinese Money Leaf, is a lovely choice. Its round, coin-shaped leaves are splashed with soft cream and green variegation, giving it a fresh, playful look. It’s perfect for bright shelves, windowsills, desks, or gifting to someone who loves unusual little plants.
Origin: Pilea peperomioides is native to the Yunnan Province of southern China, where it grows in rocky, shaded areas. The ‘Sugar’ variety is a cultivated variegated form, loved for its pretty patterned leaves and charming, compact growth.
Care Guide
Light: Pilea peperomioides ‘Sugar’ enjoys bright, indirect light. Good light helps maintain its variegation and keeps growth neat and healthy. Avoid harsh direct midday sun, which can scorch the pale parts of the leaves. Too little light may cause slower growth and reduced variegation.
Watering: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering. It prefers a thorough drink followed by time to dry slightly, rather than sitting in wet compost. The leaves may droop slightly when thirsty, but avoid leaving it dry for long periods. Reduce watering in winter when growth naturally slows.
Temperature & Humidity: It enjoys normal household warmth and should be kept away from cold draughts, chilly windowsills, and radiators. Average indoor humidity is usually fine, though it will appreciate a stable environment without sudden temperature changes.
Feeding: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength. No feeding is needed during winter while growth naturally slows.
Toxicity: Good news! Pilea peperomioides is generally considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. However, it’s still best to discourage pets or children from chewing the leaves, as any plant material can cause mild stomach upset.
It’s a cheerful, easy-going little plant—perfect if you want something compact, unusual, and full of character.
