Sansevieria Cylindrica - Cylindrical Snake Plant
The Sansevieria Cylindrica, often called the African Spear or Cylindrical Snake Plant, is a real showstopper. Unlike the flat, wavy leaves of its cousins, this beauty features smooth, upright, spear-like foliage that looks more like a piece of modern sculpture than a living thing. It’s incredibly hardy—perfect for those of us who might occasionally forget we actually own plants!
Origin
-
Native Roots: These plants hail from the dry, sub-tropical regions of Angola in Africa.
-
Natural Habitat: They are accustomed to rocky, arid soil and plenty of sunshine, which explains why they are so "tough as boots" in a home environment.
Indoor Care Guide
-
Light: They are very easy-going. They’ll be happiest in bright, indirect light, but they are famously tolerant of those darker corners where other plants might struggle.
-
Watering: This is the most important bit—less is more. Only water when the compost is bone dry. In the summer, this might be every few weeks; in the winter, you might only water it once every month or two.
-
Feeding: Use a liquid cacti or succulent fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer. There’s no need to feed them at all during the winter.
-
Temperature: They prefer a warm spot and really don't like being in a cold draught or near a radiator that’s blasting out heat.
-
Potting: They have quite small root systems and actually quite enjoy being a bit "pot-bound," so don't be in a rush to repot them!
Toxicity
-
Pets & Children: Please take care, as the Sansevieria Cylindrica is mildly toxic if ingested.
-
Effects: It can cause nausea, vomiting, or swelling of the mouth in cats, dogs, and curious toddlers. It’s best kept on a high shelf or a sturdy plant stand out of reach of nibblers.
