You really can’t go wrong with the Satin Pothos. Despite the name, it’s actually a Scindapsus pictus, but we call it a pothos because of its trailing habit. Those matte, heart-shaped leaves with the silvery, metallic splashes look almost painted on. An easy-care addition to soften any space.

Origin

  • Native Habitat: These beauties hail from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, specifically places like Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

  • Growth Habit: In the wild, they are "epiphytes," meaning they love to climb up tree trunks using aerial roots, though they look just as stunning cascading down from a bookshelf.

Care Guide

  • Light: They thrive in bright, indirect light. If the light is too low, those gorgeous silver markings might fade; if it’s too harsh, the leaves will scorch. A spot near a north or east-facing window is usually spot on.

  • Watering: Wait until the top two inches of soil feel dry before watering. They are quite communicative—the leaves will start to curl slightly when the plant is thirsty. Whatever you do, don't let it sit in a puddle, as they’re prone to root rot.

  • Humidity: Being tropical, they do enjoy a bit of moisture in the air. A kitchen or bathroom is ideal, or you can give them a quick mist with a spray bottle every few days.

  • Feeding: Give it a bit of liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer. You can leave it be during the winter months when growth slows down.

Toxicity

  • For Humans & Pets: It is important to note that the Satin Pothos is toxic if ingested.

  • The Cause: The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.

  • Safety Tip: Keep it well out of reach of curious cats, dogs, or toddlers. Hanging planters are a brilliant way to display the foliage safely away from nibblers.

It’s a real "set and forget" kind of plant once you find its favourite corner.
