Schefflera Arboricola gerda - Umbrella plant
Schefflera Arboricola ‘Gerda’ is a real stunner and one of our favourites for adding a bit of height and "wow factor" to a bright corner.
Commonly known as the Umbrella Tree because of the way those glossy, variegated leaves fan out, the ‘Gerda’ variety is particularly special for its creamy-yellow splashes. It’s a sturdy choice, but like any living thing, it has its preferences.
Origin
-
Native Habitat: This species hails from the tropical rainforests of Taiwan and Hainan.
-
Growth Habit: In the wild, they often grow as "epiphytes" (clambering over other trees), but in your home, they’ll happily grow upright as a bushy shrub or trained into a small tree.
Care Guide
-
Light: She loves bright, indirect light. A bit of morning sun is fine, but harsh midday rays might scorch those lovely variegated leaves. If it’s too dark, the yellow patches might turn solid green.
-
Watering: Wait until the top two inches of compost feel dry before watering. They don't like "wet feet," so ensure any excess water drains away from the bottom of the pot.
-
Humidity: Being a tropical soul, she appreciates a regular misting or being placed near a humidifier, especially when the central heating is on during the winter.
-
Temperature: Keep it in a warm spot. Try to avoid "draughty" spots near doors or cold windows in the winter, as they can be a bit sensitive to sudden chills.
-
Feeding: Give it a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer growing season.
Toxicity
-
Safety Warning: It is important to note that Schefflera is toxic if ingested.
-
Pets & Children: The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system. It’s best kept on a high shelf or stand out of reach of curious cats, dogs, or little ones.
She really is a low-maintenance gem once you find her "happy place" in the house!
