If you’re looking for something with a bit of "Southern Gothic" charm or a touch of the ethereal, you really can’t go wrong with Spanish Moss. Despite the name, it isn't actually a moss at all—it’s a bromeliad (a relative of the pineapple!) and it’s an epiphyte, which means it lives on air and rain rather than digging its roots into the soil.

Origin

  • It hails from the subtropical and tropical regions of the Americas, stretching from the south-eastern United States down through Central and South America. In the wild, you’ll see it draped elegantly over the branches of Oak and Cypress trees.

  • Appearance: It grows in long, chain-like festoons of tiny, silver-grey scales that help the plant absorb moisture directly from the air.

Care Guide

Caring for Spanish Moss is a bit different from your average potted plant because there’s no compost involved!

  • Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. A bit of morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun which can scorch the delicate strands.

  • Watering: This is the most important bit. Since it has no roots, you must mist it thoroughly 2–3 times a week. Every fortnight, give it a "bath" by submerging it in a bowl of rainwater or dechlorinated tap water for about 15 minutes.

  • Airflow: It absolutely loves good ventilation. Don't tuck it away in a stagnant corner; it needs to "breathe" to dry out between waterings, otherwise, it might rot.

  • Feeding: You can add a pinch of bromeliad or air-plant fertiliser to your mister once a month during the spring and summer.

Toxicity & Safety

  • For Humans & Pets: The plant itself is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. It’s a very safe choice for a busy household.

  • A Word of Caution: If you ever collect it from the wild (though I recommend buying "clean" nursery-grown moss like mine!), be aware that it can harbour "chiggers" or small mites. The moss we sell here is, of course, completely pest-free and ready for your lounge!

It looks absolutely stunning draped over a curtain pole or hanging from a piece of driftwood.
