Tamarindus indica, the Tamarind most people only know it for the tangy paste in their kitchen cupboards, but as a living specimen, it’s a real showstopper—think delicate, feathery foliage that performs a "sleep motion" by closing up at night.

  • Origin: While it’s been naturalised across the tropics for centuries (notably India), it is actually native to tropical Africa. It thrives in warm, dryish climates and is tough as old boots once established.

  • Appearance: It’s a slow-growing evergreen with elegant, pinnate leaves. If you’re lucky and give it enough sun, it may produce pale yellow flowers with red veining, followed by those iconic bean-like pods.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: This isn't a plant for a dark corner. It craves bright, direct sunlight. A south-facing windowsill is your best bet; otherwise, it may become "leggy" as it stretches for the sun.

  • Watering: It prefers the "drench and drought" approach. Water it thoroughly until it runs out of the drainage holes, then let the top two-to-three centimetres of soil dry out completely before watering again. It’s surprisingly drought-tolerant.

  • Temperature: It likes to stay warm. Be wary of cold draughts from windows during a British winter, as it’ll drop its leaves if it gets a chill.

  • Soil & Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix—something with a bit of grit or perlite. Since it has a deep taproot, it prefers a deep pot rather than a shallow one.

  • Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), give it a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month. No need to feed it in the winter when growth slows down.

Toxicity

  • For Humans: The fruit is famously edible and delicious! However, the bark and leaves contain tannins which, if consumed in massive quantities, might cause a bit of a tummy upset.

  • For Pets: It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. It’s a much safer choice than many other tropical houseplants like lilies or monsteras.

It really is a rewarding plant, especially if you fancy yourself a bit of a bonsai enthusiast, as they respond beautifully to pruning.
