The ZZ ‘Raven’ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is easily one of the most striking specimens and a real "goth" beauty. What makes the Raven so special is its new growth; it starts out as a bright, neon green, and then, as the leaves mature, they darken into a deep, glossy purple-black that looks almost like polished stone. It’s incredibly dramatic and, luckily for you, nearly indestructible.

Origin

  • Ancestry: The standard ZZ plant is native to the rocky, arid regions of East Africa (specifically Kenya down to South Africa).

  • The 'Raven' Variety: This specific dark-leafed cultivar was developed in a nursery setting but retains all the "tough-as-nails" characteristics of its wild ancestors.

Indoor Care Guide

  • Light: It’s very flexible. While it thrives in bright, indirect light, it is famously tolerant of low-light corners where other plants might struggle. Just keep it out of harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch those lovely dark leaves.

  • Watering: This is a succulent-like plant with thick, tuberous rhizomes underground that store water. You only need to water it once the soil has completely dried out. In a typical British home, this might be once every 3 to 4 weeks. Overwatering is the only real way to upset a Raven.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A 2:1 ratio of houseplant compost and perlite (or a cacti and succulent mix) works brilliantly to ensure the roots don't sit in damp.

  • Temperature: It prefers a warm room. Do keep it away from cold draughty windows or direct heat from radiators during the winter months.

  • Feeding: It isn’t a hungry plant. A bit of liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer is plenty.

Toxicity

  • Caution: All parts of the ZZ Raven are toxic if ingested.

  • The Culprit: It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive tract.

  • Safety: It is best kept on a high shelf or stand out of reach of curious pets and small children. I also recommend washing your hands after repotting or handling the sap, as it can occasionally irritate sensitive skin.
